Illampu

NORMAL ROUTE - NORTHWEST SIDE

Among the great snowy mountains of Bolivia, the Illampu is one whose ascent requires considerable physical and mental preparation. It was first climbed in 1928 by H. Pfann, A. Horeschowsky, H. Hortnagel and E. Hein. Its summit is reserved for serious climbers, with enough experience.

Day 1. We depart from La Paz on land transport to Sorata town (3 and a half hours approximately).
Alternatively we can visit the Grotto of St. Peter (a cave which contains a lagoon and bats).
Overnight stay at a hotel.

DAY 2. From Sorata we get into the high-mountain range region domains. Travel on a 4x4 vehicle through a dirt road in bad conditions to Lacatia (1 hour). Then we begin trekking on a flat road full of stones, rocks and sand to Aguas Calientes. base camp 4650m.a.s.l.

DAY 3. We begin approach trekking on unstable rocks (45 minutes), go across stones, rocks and sand to reach the edge of the glacier (2 hours). High camp 5500m.a.s.l.

DAY 4. Go across a cracked plateau, then climb a 300m 50°/60° wall. Then flank a ridge of ice and a plateau full of accumulated snow . Finally we climb a 40 meters wall to Illampu summit 6382m.a.s.l.
Sometimes the bottom wall bergschrund presents many technical difficulties. The ice composition is very changeable with a predominance of melting ice (rotten ice). Winds are extremely strong and irregular. The ridge path leads directly to the summit.
From the summit you can see Lake Titicaca, the Altiplano and the deep and warm valleys which descend and disappear, within the permanent snow accumulations of the eastern side, where Amazonian flatlands are. We discover the path of the Cordillera Real showing its countless snowy peaks.
Return to base camp in Aguas Calientes.

DAY 5. Return trekking from Aguas Calientes to Lacatia (3 hours) and from there by land transport to Sorata and finally to La Paz.

Mururata

Mururata is characterized by its summit which happens to be an 8 km long by 2 km wide plateau. The normal route presents no difficulty.

DAY 1. We depart from La Paz, on land transportation towards San Francisco mine, we take a detour along a road not widely used to the trek starting point (2 hours). Begin the trekking up to the glacier foothills at 4600m.a.s.l. (2 hours). Camping.

DAY 2. Begin ascent trekking to reach the summit (6 hours), descend to base camp (3 hours). Camping.
Optionally we can continue the descent to the road and return to La Paz.

DAY 3. Return to La Paz.

Acotango

The Acotango is a volcano located on the border between Chile and Bolivia on the Cordillera Occidental (western mountain range) it is part of the Quimza Chatas (three peaks) massif.

Day 1. Depart from La Paz on land transport to Sajama national park (4 hours). Overnight stay at lodging.

Day 2. We depart from Sajama town, on land transport, to Chachacomani small town located at Acotango foothills at 5600m.a.s.l. (2 hours). Begin trekking taking a mining route over Condor gorge (1 hour), from there the ascent to Acotango summit is performed by a ridge which contains uphills and downhills (4 to 5 hours approximately). Then we return to Sajama town. Overnight stay at lodge.

Day 3. Take a bath in the hot springs of Sajama Park and return to La Paz.

Optionally we can continue the journey with the ascent to Sajama or Parinacota.

Choro Trail

LA CUMBRE - COROICO

This trek takes us through an area of ​​great contrasts, from the snow-capped mountain range to the Yungas subtropics. We will recall the great millennial history of Tiwanaku and Inca peoples walking over a highly engineered ancient building. This paved path, 3 to 4 meters wide, was once a regional pedestrian pathway of main trans-regional connection , hundreds of llamas carried cargo from the Amazon to the Andes or vice versa through this path.

DAY 1. Depart from La Paz on land transport to La Cumbre (1 hour). We begin the trek to El Paso at 4900m.a.s.l. where we find the old paved path which leads us to Challapampa at 2800m.a.s.l. (6hrs).

DAY 2. Descend walking down the green mountains slopes with tangled vegetation arriving at Sandillani at 2100m.a.s.l. (8 hours). Camping.

DAY 3. Trek to el Chairo, Yungas community engaged in agriculture (2 hours). Go by car to the picturesque Coroico village at 1720m.a.s.l. located on the foothills of green mount Uchumachi, well known for its warm subtropical climate environment (1 hour). Return to La Paz.

DAY 2 . We continue the trek to Cacapi at 2800m.a.s.l. (4 hours).

Day 3. Walk to Chojlla mining center at 2500 m.a.s.l. (3 hours).

Return to La Paz on a vehicle (4 hours).

Yungas Cruz Trail

This circuit belongs to the category of "Great Treks of the Andes", it goes across a section of the Cordillera Real and presents a typical Andean environment.
Since this trek at high altitude includes several passages over 5000m.a.s.l. and requires 5 to 7 trekking hours per day, being in good physical condition is essential.

DAY 1. Depart at 8:00 a.m., on private transportation to Lambate village, a lost town at the foothills of the snow-capped Illimani (3 hours). Cliffs here are stunning and the environment is still typically Andean. We begin the walk to Chuñawi town (2 hours). Camping.

DAY 2. We continue the trek to Khala city (6 hours). Camping.

DAY 3. We resume the trek, after going through Yunga Cruz hill at 4300m.a.s.l., last viewpoint to observe the Illimani, we descend steeply into Yungas deep valleys (7 hours). Camping.

DAY 4. We continue the descent to reach Chulumani (5 hours). Overnight stay at a hotel.

DAY 5. RETURN TO LA PAZ.- During the afternoon. 5 hours ride.

Pico Austria

Austria is a peak within Cordillera Real (mountain range), the trek to the summit allows us to enjoy beautiful views of the same mountain range, the Altiplano and of Lake Titicaca.

DAY 1. We depart from La Paz on land transport to Palcoco village and from there continue to La Rinconada (3 hours). Begin trekking through the path that leads to the base camp by Chiar Khota lagoon (1 hour). From the camp to Pico Austria’s summit the ascent is easy and requires about 2 and a half hours approximately. We return trekking to La Rinconada (2 hours and a half) and back to La Paz on a vehicle (3 hours).
